Five minutes with Monique

Monique, our Communications Officer

1) What does your role involve?

As a Communications Officer I am responsible for increasing staff engagement within the business. Therefore, I write and design content for our weekly internal newsletter and intranet, e-mails etc. and organise meetings and events for and with our staff. Besides that I am supporting different teams with their communication tasks.

2) What skills are required for the job?

I think that for this role you have to be organised, creative and you have to be able to foresee how information can be interpreted by different individuals.

3) What do you most enjoy about your role?

What I enjoy most about the role is being creative and working closely with the people that are being impacted by the content I prepare. For example, you see directly what the take up is when you organise/write/design something and there is always room to improvement.

4) What’s your favourite thing about working for the Shepherds Bush Housing Group?

It is nice to work with a friendly bunch of people that are open to new ideas and initiatives. The organisation is quite flat and you can directly speak to directors and the CEO, which means you do not have to go through endless committees to get things done. Besides that, we are all working here because we want to do something meaningful for our residents. Knowing that is a big motivator to do better every day.

5) Do you have any advice for aspiring internal communications officers?

Find an organisation with values that you believe in yourself. This makes adapting to the organisation and being able to understand what the organisation needs a lot easier and more fun.  Besides that, write down what you like doing and see if there is capacity to include those things in your job.

6) What is your favourite meal/food and why?

I would say the Dutch version of the Chinese kitchen. Which is I believe some sort of fusion of Chinese and Indonesian food.

7) If you could visit any place in the world where would it be and why?

I would love to go to Argentina. I have never been, but it comes across as a beautiful country that has a little bit of everything - culture, food and nature.

8) What 3 words best describe you?

I’d like to believe that I am creative, reflective and compassionate.

9) If you can instantly become an expert in something, what would it be?

I think I would like to speak all the languages of the world fluently, or is that a bit too much to ask for?

10) Can you reveal a fun fact about yourself?

I used to work as an au pair in Spain, whilst I had never even taken care of kids before and I did not speak Spanish or Catalan! As Pippi Longstocking would say: “I have never tried that before, so I think I should definitely be able to do that!”
