Chelsea tackling men’s health problems
Residents get on top of their game as Chelsea coaches and Shepherds Bush Housing Group's health professionals gave 65 men their very own health MOTs.
Chelsea community coaches alongside SBHG’s health trainers carried out checks on local men testing height, waist and weight measurements, as well as body mass indexes (BMI) and blood pressure.
The results showed that over half of the men tested showed an unhealthy BMI and some had low or high blood pressure.
Michael Cole, London Development Manager for Chelsea, said: “The results demonstrate that men in the area are in need of better access to doctors and other health workers as well as advice on issues such as diet, anti smoking and healthier lifestyles.
“We hope to help participants already tested get healthier but importantly target greater numbers and help men overcome their natural reluctance to access medical services.”
Research from the Men’s Health Consultancy shows men are one and a half times more likely to die from heart disease or cancer.
SBHG health trainer Katie Oliver said: “We’re targeting men because they’re less likely to take care of their health than women. We want them to be more aware of their health and realise that simple changes can make a big difference.
“At Chelsea Football Club, we gave them immediate health check results and advice on reducing blood pressure and nutrition. We also offered them places on our free 12 session health trainer service which looks at health issues such as weight, exercise, smoking or drink dependency.”
Chelsea Men’s Health Project uses football as a means of engaging men into exercise and to promote and deliver Healthy lifestyle workshops. The project also has trained Health Advocates able to signpost to local services.
The next men’s health checks will take place at Chelsea Football Club Men’s Health Day on Sunday 20 June 2010 during Men’s Health Week (14-20 June).
