Fresh food and nutritional advice in White City

Picture of staff giving advice at the weekly marketLocal people can buy fresh food from a new, local market stall at Phoenix Farm and Learning Centre in Shepherds Bush.

The White City Food Co-op’s market runs every Friday from 10am to 2pm at the entrance to the Phoenix Farm and Learning Centre on Bloemfontein Road.

The Food Co-op is a partnership between Staying Put Services’ Well-Being Project and Phoenix High School.

Naami Padi, Community Nutritionist at the Well-Being Project, said: “Our Friday market provides low cost, fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables reflecting the diversity of our local communities. There is an extensive range of fruit and vegetables including spinach, sweet potatoes and okra.

“The Food Co-op promotes healthy living and encourages people to think about their diet and exercise. Using fresh food in cooking boosts it nutritional value while shopping at the market is a great way to meet people.”

Well-Being staff also offer advice on simple recipes and give out free samples of the cooked recipes. They also offer advice on nutrition and exercise.

More than 160 people have become members of the Food Co-op which means they get a 5% discount. Each week the food sell outs and the small profit is put back into the project.

The Food Co-op is funded by the Big Lottery and Well London.
