Major Adaptations

Major adaptations are designed to have a significant impact on the independence and well-being of disabled people in their own home. Very often they make the difference allowing people to stay in their own home with greatly increased independence and dignity.

In 2009/10 the Home Improvement Agency carried out 282 adaptations at a total cost of over £1 Million.

Typical major adaptations include level access showers, over bath showers, hoists, stairlifts, platform wheelchair lifts and ramps.

Would an adaptation help you to be more independent?

Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) are available for major adaptations in RBKC for home owners, private sector tenants and hosing association tenants.

Whilst DFGs are a mandatory grant, all applicants are means-tested using criteria that is set by central government and applied nationally. The HIA can help ascertain your eligibility by undertaking a financial assessment (Preliminary Test of Resources) with you. Additionally, to be eligible for a DFG you will need to be assessed by a qualified Occupational Therapist to ascertain your needs.

The HIA also works with a number of housing associations, including SBHA, to provide a major adaptation service for their tenants. The others are:

• Notting Hill Housing
• Family Mosaic
• Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association

If you are a tenant of one of the associations that we work with and think you would benefit from adaptation works to your property, your first contact should be with your landlord or your local social services department.
