What happens if I don't pay
All tenants are responsible for paying their rent. It is a common mistake for tenants who get Housing Benefit to believe that they are not responsible for paying the rent – they are! It’s just that Housing Benefit make payments on their behalf. If your Housing Benefit is cancelled or suspended, these payments will stop and your rent account will go into arrears. Rent arrears
Before we take any action, we will try to contact you by phone, in person and by letter. If we have been unable to contact you, or we have failed to agree a solution to your rent arrears, we will take the next level of action. The first part of this process is to serve a Notice of Seeking Possession (NOSP). A NOSP is a 28 day pre court notice and has to be served prior to court action. The NOSP is a notification that we intend to seek possession of your property, and allows us to do so after 28 days.
If you are in arrears you should call your income officer and try to reach an agreement with them to clear the arrears. If an agreement is made before we have applied for a court hearing, the proceedings will be stopped. If you do not contact your income officer and resolve the issue, you could end up losing your home. Please click here to find your income officer
