Shepherds Bush Housing Group

Independent Tenants’ Committee

The Independent Tenants Committee (ITC) was established in 1989 as an independent committee run by tenants for tenants. It's the main tenant consultative body for Shepherds Bush Housing Association tenants.

The ITC is an independent body and seeks to increase its membership year on year.

It has 17 members at the moment and we're always keen to hear from anyone interested in becoming involved.

Our ITC influences the policy, strategy and operations of SBHA. In addition, it provides invaluable assistance to staff in improving services.

The committee is elected annually by the tenants at its annual general meeting (AGM). The 2010 AGM is on 07 July.

The ITC meets eight times a year. Alternate meeting review and discuss current policies and procedures and plan the work of its sub committees.

Its sub committees monitor work on estates and empty properties, plan events and forums and assist in the quarterly SBHG newsletter, Buzz.

By monitoring national events and issues that affect resident involvement, the ITC feeds back information to residents.

Training and support is offered by the ITC to residents who wish to get involved and develop the skills and knowledge to ensure they can fully participate.

Jane Sheehan, the intouch@sbha officer, is employed by the ITC. Jane provides support to the ITC and tenants. Intouch@sbha carries out surveys, focus groups, and mystery shopping and tenant liaison under the guidance of the ITC.

The ITC is also responsible for managing and distributing SBHA’s community grants and estate improvements budget. These are allocated annually.

Summary of the April ITC meeting
The meeting was attended by Paul Doe, Chief Executive of SBHA. There were two main items for discussion:
• the proposed review of Resident Involvement, the timetable and the process; and
• the TSA Standards, the action plan and process.

The ITC also heard report backs from the various review panels and forums
that are currently taking place where residents are involved. These panels are reviewing areas of policy and service such as the redecoration allowance for relet properties and the review of the compensation policy.

The intouch@sbha officer also discussed with the meeting the current training sessions that she had planned based on their requests and the schedules for the estate visits that they would be carrying out on the next few months.

The next ITC meeting will take place on Wednesday 26 May 2010.

The ITC produces a newsletter three times each year which is sent to all tenants. You can read or download it here.
