VolunteeringVolunteers' BBQ 2009

People volunteer for many reasons.  Some want to give back to the community.  Some want to acquire new skills.  Some use volunteering as a way to meet people and make new friends.

We have more than 50 volunteers in place at any one time.  Their work is vital to the services we offer and makes a real difference.

Opportunities for volunteering exist throughout SBHG, co-ordinated by Jennette Skinner, who said: "We have volunteers working in many different areas of the business and rely on them to support our work. They give freely of their time and enthusiasm to help support us and our residents.  We were recently awarded “Investing in Volunteering” accreditation which is testimony to our commitment to volunteering and the valuable contribution our volunteers make."

Volunteers contribute services ranging from spending time with the lonely, elderly or vulnerable tenants through to office administrative work.  From volunteering, some have gone on to become full-time members of SBHG staff.

The volunteering project supports and enhances services by helping SBHG to use the skills and experience offered by volunteers.  Staying First was awarded the “Investing In Volunteers” accreditation in 2009 and signed up to the London Management Volunteer Charter in 2011.

Since 2007 we have helped more than 400 volunteers.  More than 100 of these have now moved into employment, 18 of these within SBHG through the Volunteer into Work programme.
