Shepherds Bush Housing Group

Equality and diversityAdrian Wilgoss receives award from London Equal Opportunities Federation

At Shepherds Bush Housing Group we value diversity and promote equal opportunities. We are a diverse organisation, incorporating traditional housing provision, support services for vulnerable people, repairs and property maintenance. We also provide our Well-Being service, aids and adaptations and furniture recycling through Staying First.

We believe that providing affordable homes of quality is the very foundation of our society. Similarly, we realise that housing enables our residents to access social institutions such as education and health and allows them better access to the labour market. Our objective is to be more than a social landlord. We provide diverse services that add value to new and existing communities by creating cohesion and a prosperous socio-economic environment.

The communities we serve are not just racially diverse. Religious values, cultural needs and the requirements of the elderly and vulnerable have always been key considerations for us.  We give equal prominence to those who are disabled or have different sexual orientations. We want to ensure all have equal access to our employment opportunities and economic opportunities, such as the chance to tender for our contracts. SBHG is proud to be a Stonewall diversity champion. Click here to read the Starting Out guide.

In 2009 we received a long service award from the London Equal Opportunities Federation (LEOF). LEOF ensures that housing associations, local government and public body organisations promote the use of contractors and consultants from minority backgrounds. The picture is of us receiving the award.

Our approach means that no community is marginalised.  We view all strands of diversity, not just race and gender, in the mainstream so that our performance can continually improve.  We have systems which collate information about how well we perform regarding diversity. This information is termed ‘diversity information’ and helps us to develop new and innovative practices.  You can read our most recent equalities and diversity review under our corporate policies. This highlights our equalities and diversity work over the past 12 months.

Our commitment is enshrined in our core value of

We respect others

We will show respect, openness and fairness in our work. We respect and celebrate difference and diversity. We treat people as individuals and value their contributions. Our services will reflect this difference and strive to meet the variety of needs that face us.
